There are essentially 3 reasons one will use a sewing needle or any other needle besides knitting needles or a crochet hook while knitting or crocheting.
Sewing on attachments like zippers and buttons
Applying surface design such as embroidery or sequence
As a finishing technique such as weaving in ends or seaming (such as tapestry needles)
To achieve these 3 things there are a host of needles with different sharpness and bluntness as well as thiness and thickness. Sewing needles are typically used to apply attachments such as zippers and buttons. Needles use to complete surface designs such as embroidery or sequence are usually determined by 2 factors: one factor being the type of application and the other being the type of yarn used (usually the thickness). Types of applications include applications such as sequence and embroidery. Each application will usually have needles unique to the application in order to facilitate the application. However, the type of yarn and its thickness must also be considered when choosing
these needles.
