In the previous week's article we discussed the standard features that can typically be found on every knitting pattern, at least those found in the U.S. In this week's article we are going to be discussing how to chose a knitting pattern for those who are more advanced and for those who have read the previous week's article. We highly recommend applying what you have learn in the previous week's article if you are a beginner and then coming back and re-reading this article for more advanced knitters.
When choosing your knitting pattern consider the following:
Skill Level - is this knitting pattern the right pattern for your skill level. Read over the pattern completely and ask yourself if you can do everything the instructions say.
Needles - do you have the correct needles needed to complete the project. Obtain all the supplies you need to complete your project prior to beginning.
Yarns - the pattern will tell you which yarn weight and how many yards /ounces of yarn you will need. When you obtain your yarn it will also tell you the lot number for the yarn. The lot number confirms the dye continuity of your yarn. Purchase all the same dye lot when purchasing yarn. This may not apply to synthetic yarns.
Other Supplies - other supplies might include a darning needle or a stitch marker. All the supplies you need will likely be under one section near the beginning of the pattern. Obtain all your supplies prior to beginning your project. Over time you will begin to gather these supplies and will already have them in your knitting bag.
DIY - do it yourself. Knitting is a great opportunity to make special gifts for others that simply can not be had anywhere else and typically they will come to treasure your gifts. Its also an opportunity to make something special and unique for yourself. This is a time when DIY simply thrives!
Gifting - again there is simply nothing like gifting especially when it is handmade by you!
Stock your Closet - making knitted projects for yourself is also a great way to stock your closet with scarves, sweaters and other items made by you.
Holidays - the Holidays are the ultimate gift giving times along with special occasions like birthdays.
Time - consider how much time the project will take to complete. Do you have a deadline (i.e. a birthday) coming up? Do you have enough time to get the project done by the time you would like?
UFOs - UnFinished Objects. Be careful of unfinished objects. Its easy to get carry away from one project to another without completing the previous project. Try to complete your projects before moving on to another.
Caring & Storing - many knitted projects are made with will. Consider cider chips for storing your knitted projects. Properly care for your knitted projects. Keep the projects you are working on in a bag to protect the yarn / fabric from spills etc. Once your project is completed adhere to the care instructions on the yarn label and store it properly. You spent a lot of time on your project. Take good care of it.
