1) Choosing your Yarn - Fiber
When making pot holders there are a few things to consider when choosing your yarn. It is important to consider the fact that you will be handling warm to semi hot pots and exposing your pot holders to some degree of heat. While merino wool and silks are the best natural fabrics to use when making pot holder because of the heat factor, it is important to remember not to use them for very hot items such as pots and pans coming out of the oven. It is best to use fabrics that are designed to handle high temperatures such as synthetics and heat and fire resistant treated fibers and fabrics.
The majority of the craft yarns that you will find in you LYS - local yarn shop - are not designed to withstand such temperatures and are not treated accordingly. The synthetics craft yarns you typically find at your LYS are not heat and fire resistant and tend to melt around heat and temperatures. for this reason we are going to suggest cotton to be used with, others might recommend wool, get our Pot Holder Pattern:
